Injured employees may receive help with workers' compensation

Employees who are injured in North Carolina may be entitled to certain benefits by filing a workers' compensation claim. These benefits may help those who are injured receive medical care for their injuries and some financial help while they heal.

Medical care is normally provided under workers' compensation claims. This medical care includes treatment for the injury, payment of medical bills, prescription medications and reimbursement for mileage to and from the hospital. Some employer workers' compensation plans require that employees use a certain medical facility or doctor for the first 30 days. After this time, employees may choose a different doctor via a written request.

Employees may be entitled to payment for wages lost when they cannot work with temporary disability. Temporary disability typically pays two-thirds of the employee's wages at the time of the injury. Those who will not recover from their injury may be entitled to permanent disability payments. After recovering from the injury, employees may receive vocational rehabilitation to find a different line of work should the injury prevent them from returning to their previous employer. Those who can return to their previous job will typically lose their workers' compensation benefits if they make the same wage or greater.

According to the United States Department of Labor, over 1,300 people filed workers' compensation claims by October of 2019 in North Carolina. Employees who are injured are entitled to benefits under workers' compensation that may help them get the medical care and lost wages they need during recovery. A workers' compensation lawyer may be able to help an employee who was injured on the job by filing a workers' compensation claim. For example, an employee who was permanently disabled while at work may be entitled to medical care, disability benefits and occupational therapy to help him or her obtain new employment after treatment.
