How workers get hurt on the job

Employers in North Carolina and throughout the United States are encouraged to make employee safety a top priority. OSHA recently released its list of the 10 most common workplace safety violations for fiscal year 2019, and fall protection violations were the top cause of workplace injuries during that time period. Hazard communication, scaffolding and ladder violations were also among the top 10 most frequently cited violations. While these types of accidents can happen anywhere, they occur with regularity in the manufacturing sector.

In 2017, Bureau of Labor Statistics data indicated that manufacturing companies were second on the list of non-fatal occupational injuries and illnesses. It is worth acknowledging that those who work in the manufacturing industry face a number of dangers that are inherent to the work that they do. It is unlikely that companies can develop workplace policies that eliminate the need for repetitive motion or that make it easier to develop products without generating heat.

However, employers are encouraged to take steps to make workplaces safer however they can. For instance, Toyota has developed exoskeletons for employees to wear to reduce the risk of injuries during overhead work. All companies are encouraged to embrace OSHA standards and take other steps to ensure that workers can do their jobs in a safe environment.

If a person is hurt in a workplace accident, he or she may be entitled to workers' compensation benefits. This may make it easier to recoup lost wages or make it easier to pay medical bills related to a workplace injury. In some cases, individuals who are hurt at work may be entitled to file a personal injury lawsuit.
