Driving safely at night

Many people in North Carolina are injured in crashes every year. According to National Safety Council research, the risk of being in a fatal crash is three times greater when driving at night. Drivers should use extra caution to make driving at night safer.

Many people find that their driving abilities are compromised at night due to poor night vision. To combat this problem, it is important to have annual vision exams. If the problem is serious enough and removing distractions does not help, it may be necessary to limit driving to daytime hours.

Fatigue is a serious problem for many drivers. Approximately 37 percent of drivers admit that they have fallen asleep at the wheel. One in 25 drivers say that they have caused a car accident by falling asleep while driving. Drivers should make sure that they get plenty of sleep, travel during times when they are normally awake and pull over if they become too tired to continue driving safely.

Impaired driving is another risk factor for crashes at night. One study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that 22 percent of drivers tested positive for an impairing substance between 2013 and 2014. While drunk driving has declined, crashes in which other substances were a factor are increasing.

Car accident victims may benefit from consulting a personal injury attorney about filing a claim against the negligent driver responsible for the accident. A person who was injured in an accident that was not their fault may be able to recover damages for actual expenses such as medical bills and lost wages as well as damages that are harder to calculate like pain and suffering. An attorney may be able to assist with a personal injury claim by requesting police reports and medical records, interviewing witnesses, negotiating with insurance companies and filing a lawsuit.
