When using gas pumps makes sense

North Carolina workers who are tasked with using a gas detector generally use one with a pump on it. It is thought that the detectors are slower and less reliable without one. While this may be more myth than fact, a pump may make it safer to check the air for toxic or combustible substances. This is because air can be drawn into the detector and analyzed from a safer location.

Having a pump may make it safer for workers to enter enclosed spaces that may contain air that is not safe to breathe. It is important to note that using a pump will not increase the amount of gas that can be analyzed at once. Other downsides may include the fact that a pump adds weight to a gas detection machine, which may make it harder to use.

Since the pump uses battery power to operate, it is possible that the machine will run for a shorter period of time. This could be hazardous for workers who need their units to run for as many as 12 hours per day. Therefore, it may be a good idea to only use a pump when it isn't safe to work without one. When a pump is used, workers should allow wait at least two to three minutes to get accurate results.

While workers' compensation benefits are traditionally associated with injuries sustained in an on-the-job accident, they are also available for people who incur an occupational disease after being exposed to a toxic substance. An attorney can often be of assistance in the preparation and timely filing of the required claim documentation.
