U.S. wants to remove regulatory barriers to self-driving cars

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration wants to clear the way for the use of self-driving cars in North Carolina and across the country. On Oct. 27, the federal auto safety agency said it intends to eliminate "unnecessary" regulations that may hinder the introduction of autonomous vehicles, especially those designed without controls for human drivers.

In a statement, the NHTSA said that it wants to solicit comments about the kinds of research it could conduct to best identify problematic regulations in need of amending or elimination. The agency indicated that a public notice on the comments could be published by the end of November.

Right now, auto manufacturers are required to follow almost 75 safety rules before placing a self-driving car on the road. However, many of the rules were written for vehicles controlled by licensed drivers, not for autonomous vehicles. Last year, the NHTSA said that current regulations are difficult for makers of driverless cars, which include Alphabet Inc., General Motors and Ford. In October, a U.S. Senate committee voted to approve a bill that allows automakers to avoid certain safety regulations for up to 80,000 self-driving vehicles a year. This could help speed up the adoption of the technology on U.S. roads. The bill also requires the NHTSA to create permanent safety rules for autonomous vehicles within the next 10 years.

Car accidents injure thousands of Americans each year. Individuals who are hurt in an auto crash may need to file a personal injury lawsuit against the at-fault party in order to recover costs. Damages sought in a personal injury complaint may include pain and suffering, medical expenses, lost wages and more.
